Blog written by Dr. Matias Fernandez Viña, expert and first degree course in Regenerative Medicine of Argentina's Universidad Abierta Interamericana.
Regenerative medicine is an innovative and multidisciplinary branch of medicine, where multiple fields converge. Within the Regenerative Medicine we find 3 important areas:
A. Cellular Therapies
B. Biomolecules
C. Bio-Engineering and Organs in 3D.
Within the field of Cellular Therapiesthere are medical strategies currently in use, supported by varying levels of scientific evidence.
As such, cellular therapies, obtained from a source precursor of these cells, whether the bone marrow, adipose tissue or umbilical cord, serve to treatments that often can't be solved with traditional therapy, whether pharmacological or surgical.
Within the Area of the biomolecules, here we have all the derived products of regenerative medicine, which do not form part of the cell therapy, but exert a therapeutic effect regenerative. Within this area, we found exosomes, and even regenerative therapies blood-derived peripheral as it is the Platelet-Rich Plasma, which is not a product-based cells, and that lends itself to confusion under many professionals who are unfamiliar with this field, mixing up your terminology with the “cell stem”.
In a third point, we have the bio-engineering of tissues, and organs 3D. This field still lacks scientific evidence in randomized, double-blind, randomised, but yes, there are several models in vitro and pre-clinical offering a possible strategy.
The fusion of the bioimpresion organ 3D cells, and even the organs decellularized, is one of the promises more great science within regenerative medicine. As we create a body with the essential provisions that required to have for that receiver you need it, reducing greatly the problems attracted by the immunosuppression.
Regenerative Medicine is not yet a medical specialty, of which many professionals do not know this area and take a simple course, who call themselves as Specialists. It is a serious mistake. In the same way that there are no specialists in Platelet-Rich Plasma or Stem Cells.
Regenerative medicine if it has levels of training college, with the possibility of obtaining a post-graduate diploma, bachelor's or Master's degree. But not a specialty, or even less supported by any Medical College of Argentina, due to lack of regulation, until the date of 2024. (date of written this blog).
The rational use of Regenerative Medicine, enabling patients to learn properly to make decisions at the time of access to a scientific study or a therapy innovative or compassionate use, and the professionals give it an interesting tool of work, without falling into the fanaticism of the entrepreneurship of miraculous therapies, which, until now, none has been shown to cure it, but improvement of quality of life in patients.
