The Stem Cell Therapy Argentina Research and Clinical Applications Group, located in San Nicol\u00e1s de los Arroyos, is not only the first center for advanced and highly complex regenerative therapies in the northern part of Buenos Aires Province, but also leads one of the largest scientific studies in Argentina on the regeneration of articular cartilage in osteoarthritis<\/a>, primarily of the knee and hip. Non-surgical biological regenerative therapies consist of the use and application of autologous biological products (regenerative mesenchymal stem cells and regenerative growth factors) obtained from the patient’s own bone marrow or adipose tissue.<\/p>\n\n

In just 140 minutes, patients with osteoarthritis in their joints, and more specifically in the knee and hip<\/a>, could change the course of their chronic degenerative disease and stabilize the problem until the regeneration of articular cartilage is achieved.<\/p>\n\n

These therapies, which are innovative and booming in the United States and Europe (mainly Spain and Italy), are now available in Argentina and in the city of San Nicol\u00e1s de los Arroyos, thanks to the Stem Cell Therapy Argentina group located at 73 Garibaldi Street, directed by Dr. Mat\u00edas Fern\u00e1ndez Vi\u00f1a, an expert in Regenerative Medicine and Molecular Biology. Stem Cell Therapy Argentina works and conducts ongoing research with two types of biological products or therapies that can regenerate articular cartilage: Mesenchymal Stem Cells<\/a> (MSCs) and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)<\/a>. Stem Cell Therapy Argentina’s short-term goal is to improve patients’ quality of life through stem cell treatment, which can be derived from bone marrow, abdominal fat, or the well-known platelet-rich plasma (PRP). This treatment is performed quickly, on an outpatient basis, without surgery. Stem cells are obtained in 20 minutes (using local anesthesia for extraction) and processed within 120 minutes before being reinjected into damaged joint sites, such as the knees.<\/p>\n\n

Within 2 to 6 months, structural changes in the articular cartilage can be observed using T2-weighted MRI and a globally recognized chronic joint pain scale. Once cellular regeneration of the articular cartilage is achieved, the patient can enter a Regenerative Rehabilitation program, where the goal is to reintegrate them into the basic activities necessary for a good quality of life. <\/p>\n\n

Stem Cell Therapy Argentina’s long-term goal, through its Advanced Therapies Research Center and three other locations in the country\u2014Col\u00f3n (Entre R\u00edos), Rosario, and Mendoza\u2014is to regenerate organs and structures using 3D bioprinting of organs with the patient’s own stem cells. This means that regenerating an ear, a hand bone, a specific skin segment, as well as an artery, ureter, or kidney, may be possible. An athlete<\/a> with a grade 2 muscle tear can return to the field of play in 17 to 22 days with these regenerative therapies. Rafa Nadal, S. Curry, Lionel Messi, J.M. Del Potro, Navas, and C. Puyol have been leading proponents of Regenerative Medicine worldwide for several years. Regenerative therapies, in addition to being safe, are demonstrating efficacy in clinical application. Scientific studies have shown that bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells have responded with greater safety and efficacy compared to hyaluronic acid as a conventional treatment for knee osteoarthritis. Stem Cell Therapy Argentina, through Doctors Matias Fern\u00e1ndez Vi\u00f1a, Jorge Cipitria, and Liliana Camozzi, presented their 12-month follow-up results at the World Congress of Regenerative Medicine in the United States. These results followed a group of knee osteoarthritis patients treated with stem cells who had no other therapeutic options. The results have not only been satisfactory, but also compelling and motivating. Of the 69 patients treated, their average quality of life was 6% (they were unable to walk, did not engage in physical activity, and lived with chronic joint pain, with 90% of them being chronic users of analgesics). After 12 months of treatment, their quality of life improved to an average of 69.8%, and analgesic consumption decreased to 15% (they experience minimal pain with strenuous activity, but are able to participate in physical and sporting activities and even sleep better at night, as they no longer need to take analgesics chronically). This work was accepted and approved by the Review Committee and presented at conferences twice in Miami: at the World Stem Cell Summit 2019 and at Advanced Therapies Week 2020, the most advanced Cell Therapy Congress currently held worldwide, and also at the Latin American Stem Cell Congress in the Dominican Republic. <\/p>\n\n
