Non-surgical biological regenerative therapies consist of the use and application of autologous biological products (regenerative mesenchymal stem cells and regenerative growth factors) obtained from the patient’s own bone marrow or adipose tissue.

In just 140 minutes, patients with osteoarthritis in their joints, and more specifically in the knee and hip, could change the course of their chronic degenerative disease and stabilize the problem until the regeneration of articular cartilage is achieved.

These therapies, which are innovative and booming in the United States and Europe (mainly Spain and Italy), are now available in Argentina and in the city of San Nicolás de los Arroyos, thanks to the Stem Cell Therapy Argentina group located at 73 Garibaldi Street, directed by Dr. Matías Fernández Viña, an expert in Regenerative Medicine and Molecular Biology. Stem Cell Therapy Argentina works and conducts ongoing research with two types of biological products or therapies that can regenerate articular cartilage: Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP). One of the strengths of this research group, in addition to the advanced technology used to produce these treatment alternatives, is the exceptionally high quality of the cell product injected into specific sites of joint damage using fluoroscopy and live ultrasound.

“One of the main problems that many doctors who apply these therapies have is that they do not know or do not know the quality of the cell product because they have difficulties or lack knowledge in laboratory testing, and that is due to the lack of training and standardization of models for preparing the specific biological product for each patient,” says Professor of Medicine at the Inter-American Open University of Rosario, Dr. Matias Fernández Viña.

The current problem that generally arises is the lack of medical information regarding the application of these therapies, which must be permanently supervised and controlled by a physician specializing in Regenerative Medicine and Cell Therapy. Dr. Matías Fernández Viña has been trained, qualified, and certified in the three most advanced centers in the world for Regenerative Medicine:

– The Spanish Network of Cell Therapy (9 Hospitals with Centers for Regenerative Medicine and Cell Therapy) through the former Minister of Health of Spain, Dr. Bernat Soria Escoms, at the University of Miami (Miami Sports Medicine Institute) through Dr. Diego Correa, and at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, together with Medical Researcher Anthony Atala, a pioneer in 3D Bio-Prints of organs with cultured mesenchymal stem cells. Currently, Dr. Fernandez Viña, 30 years old, is President of the Latin American Chapter of the American College of Regenerative Medicine (ACRM) in the United States. His scientific research and clinical applications team in Argentina consists of Dr. Matias Ivan Spitaleri (General Practitioner), Dr. Roberto Fernandez Viña (Cardiologist), Dr. Liliana Camozzi (Biochemist), Dr. Gisela Reinchisi (PhD in Molecular Biology), Dr. Gabriel Carbone (Cardiovascular Surgeon), Dr. Jorge Cipitria (Traumatologist), Dr. Javier Camozzi (Plastic Surgeon), Lic. Lucía Osuna (Kinesiologist), Physical Education Professors Fernando Juarez, Fausto Ballestero, and Jerónimo Cernadas, Lic. Betiana Vigo (Nutritionist), Psychologists Evelina Casino and Marianella Sanchez Ressi, and Imaging Technicians Luis Regalado and Lorena García.

Stem Cell Therapy Argentina’s short-term goal is to improve patients’ quality of life through stem cell treatment, which can be derived from bone marrow, abdominal fat, or the well-known platelet-rich plasma (PRP). This treatment is performed quickly, on an outpatient basis, without surgery. Stem cells are obtained in 20 minutes (using local anesthesia for extraction) and processed within 120 minutes before being reinjected into damaged joint sites, such as the knees.

Within 2 to 6 months, structural changes in the articular cartilage can be observed using T2-weighted MRI and a globally recognized chronic joint pain scale. Once cellular regeneration of the articular cartilage is achieved, the patient can enter a Regenerative Rehabilitation program, where the goal is to reintegrate them into the basic activities necessary for a good quality of life.

Stem Cell Therapy Argentina’s long-term goal, through its Advanced Therapies Research Center and three other locations in the country—Colón (Entre Ríos), Rosario, and Mendoza—is to regenerate organs and structures using 3D bioprinting of organs with the patient’s own stem cells. This means that regenerating an ear, a hand bone, a specific skin segment, as well as an artery, ureter, or kidney, may be possible. This science is not far from being applied, as these types of interventions are already being performed in animal research phases. Many athletes in the city of San Nicolás are already relying on these regenerative therapies because conventional treatment strategies are not as quick to get them back on the field compared to regenerative approaches.

An athlete with a grade 2 muscle tear can return to the field of play in 17 to 22 days with these regenerative therapies. Rafa Nadal, S. Curry, Lionel Messi, J.M. Del Potro, Navas, and C. Puyol have been leading proponents of Regenerative Medicine worldwide for several years. Regenerative therapies, in addition to being safe, are demonstrating efficacy in clinical application. Scientific studies have shown that bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells have responded with greater safety and efficacy compared to hyaluronic acid as a conventional treatment for knee osteoarthritis. Stem Cell Therapy Argentina, through Doctors Matias Fernández Viña, Jorge Cipitria, and Liliana Camozzi, presented their 12-month follow-up results at the World Congress of Regenerative Medicine in the United States. These results followed a group of knee osteoarthritis patients treated with stem cells who had no other therapeutic options. The results have not only been satisfactory, but also compelling and motivating. Of the 69 patients treated, their average quality of life was 6% (they were unable to walk, did not engage in physical activity, and lived with chronic joint pain, with 90% of them being chronic users of analgesics). After 12 months of treatment, their quality of life improved to an average of 69.8%, and analgesic consumption decreased to 15% (they experience minimal pain with strenuous activity, but are able to participate in physical and sporting activities and even sleep better at night, as they no longer need to take analgesics chronically). This work was accepted and approved by the Review Committee and presented at conferences twice in Miami: at the World Stem Cell Summit 2019 and at Advanced Therapies Week 2020, the most advanced Cell Therapy Congress currently held worldwide, and also at the Latin American Stem Cell Congress in the Dominican Republic.

“We know that we are facing a new paradigm shift in Medicine and that this Regenerative Medicine will replace many conventional treatments in certain aspects, but we are even more certain that our research group is taking the first fundamental and essential steps to help improve people’s quality of life,” says Dr. Matías Fernández Viña.

Tissue regeneration in humans is possible, a concept that for many years was not believed to apply to humans, but was accepted for animals. Today, regenerative biological therapies have proven to be safe and potentially effective in regenerating tissues and organs, primarily cartilage in chronic degenerative osteoarthritis of the knee and hip, representing innovative non-surgical treatment strategies.

For more information, you can contact us at 0336-4496953, visit us at Garibaldi 73, San Nicolás de los Arroyos, or send an email to info@stemcelltherapyargentina.com.
