The Medical Society American Sports Medicine (AMSSM) has published a position statement on the principles for the responsible use of regenerative medicine in sports medicine.
This position statement provides sports medicine physicians information about the terminology of regenerative medicine, a brief review of the basic science and clinical studies, regulatory considerations, and best practices to introduce the classification ortobiológica of regenerative therapies in clinical practice.
The document is published in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine, and published highlights editorial in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Both are freely available on their respective web sites."The sports medicine physicians would benefit from a guide to decision-making about whether to enter the ortobiología in your practice and how to do it in a responsible way," said Dr. Jonathan Finnoff, medical director of the Olympic Committee and Paralympic athlete from the united States and the principal author of the declaration. "The information contained in this statement will help the sports medicine physicians to make informed decisions and responsible about the role of regenerative medicine and the ortobiología in your practice."
In 2019, the Board of Directors of AMSSM established a Working Group of Regenerative Medicine, a sub-group with a mandate to develop a position statement of regenerative medicine. The Working Group convened a writing group that included doctors and scientists of sports medicine that are recognized leaders in bioethics, research, and clinical applications of regenerative medicine to produce this statement. The field of regenerative medicine, and the subclassification of orthobiological, involving a variety of therapies and techniques that are focused on the repair or replacement of damaged or diseased tissue to restore function. Despite the fact that these new therapies are very attractive for the sports medicine physicians and for patients, this is a complex topic and controversial.“The orthobiological commonly used in research and medical practice are being combined under the umbrella of the therapy of ‘stem cells’ in a way that confuses both patients and the public,” said Dr. Shane Shapiro, one of the main authors of the declaration. "The need for treatments scientifically validated orthopaedic conditions and sports that do not heal, there has been increasing interest in the orthobiological and other regenerative therapies to address the gaps of existing treatment".
The document includes brief discussions on basic science, proposed therapeutic mechanisms of action, and clinical evidence related to regenerative medicine products, including the use of platelet-rich plasma and other cell therapies. Additionally, the statement includes sections on regulatory considerations and a detailed section on the integration of regenerative medicine into clinical practice.
